The Westlake High School Boys Soccer team puts together a fundraiser tournament each year called the Battle of Asgard. The boys have participated in it many times. This year Skyler decided to put his own team together after he thought he would be on a team with his friends Bryce (coaches son) and Brayden. But last minute they said they already had another keeper—who Skyler later found out was a last-minute keeper they recruited from Salt Lake Community College. Skyler's team didn't have any subs so they knew it would be an uphill battle especially since 2 of their games were played back to back. They were playing really well, and the last game to play before determining the finalists was against his friends' team. It was back and forth and very physical. Sandy Bastian, Bryce's mom even started trying to ref the game, calling very unfair calls. The game ended in a tie, but due to the rules Skyler's team had a better goal differential and was supposed to head straight to the finals. Sandy wasn't happy about it and insisted they keep playing until they had a winner knowing Sky's team was exhausted with no subs. She stated that the team waiting to play in the finals wanted to "play the winner" rather than a tie. It was so chaotic, so they kept playing until Don, Sandy's husband arrived after putting out a fight in another match and called the game. Sandy and Don started a screaming match which was comical and entertaining until Don won and sent Skyler's team to play in the finals. Sandy was so upset and said the "wrong team" is going to the finals. Duncan's mom, the team mom was furious how it all went and was ready to quit herself because of Sandy's behavior.
Without a break, Skyler's poor team was exhausted. The other team was well-rested, had plenty of subs and held the Battle of Asgard title for the past 5 years. Skyler and his team were just grateful to make it as far as they did and knew they had their work cut out for them. Skyler was amazing! Save after save. It went into over time, they were down by one with 5 minutes left and came back and scored 2 goals before the buzzer. They won the tournament and the Battle of Asgard trophy. Several players and parents let Skyler's team know they were ecstatic they won. It was a crazy tournament and worth every penny to watch the drama unfold. Sandy later sent a text to mom apologizing to mom about how she was misunderstood and stating she was proud of Skyler's team. Glad the high school soccer days are over, but this was worth the come back!
