Westlake's Drill team has always had to fight its way to the state finals and this year was no exception. Aysia had been to the finals 2 out of the past 3 years. She was hoping to make it one last time as a senior. They were once again on the bubble and didn't get to advance straight to the finals. They were shocked to hear American Fork was one of 8 teams moving on. They had to wait for the second semifinal round to learn who the ninth team would be as the "Wildcard" team (meaning, the team with the 9th highest scoring points out of 18 teams in the semifinals). The girls all huddled together in the Wright's basement and had a screaming fest when they heard Westlake's name called as the 9th team to move on to the finals. Their one goal was to beat out American Fork since Westlake felt they had stronger, cleaner routines.
There was a large crowd supporting Westlake including several of our family members, Grandma and Grandpa, Abby and her kids and several friends. Aysia was awarded the All-State certificate and was showcased for a few seconds on the floor. Aunt Carol even performed with her dance team, Jean's Golden Girls for an intermediate act. The team did a great job and were happy with their performance. They ended up 8th!! They beat out American Fork, knowing they should have been the team to go straight through. They proved themselves and were happy with their results. Now on to Nationals!
