June is a crazy birthday month for us! We have 3 birthdays
within 4 days. Taylor had to go out of town on a business trip and we didn’t
have much on our schedule other than Skyler’s birthday at the end of the week.
After asking Skyler what he wanted for his birthday, he jokingly said “Let’s go
to 6-Flags”. I said okay!! After the shock wore off, I told the kids they had a
$500 budget which included everything from food, gas, lodging and
entertainment. The only item that would not be included was a nice dinner for
Skyler’s birthday and any food we purchase from a grocery store since I would
be paying for that anyway at home. So as I worked Tuesday night, the kids
cleaned the house, packed suitcases and lunches. We were off first thing
Wednesday morning.
DAY 1: We drove to Las Vegas and stayed at the South Point Hotel which is much more kid friendly than those in the middle of Vegas. We got a great deal on the room and had coupons for bowling at their bowling alley. After playing a game, we went to the grocery store and bought items for dinner. Then it was swimming until the pool closed at 10pm. It was a great first day and we stayed in our budget.
DAY 2: We woke up bright and early
Thursday (Skyler’s Birthday) and traveled to 6 flags. We bought some discounted
tickets and spent the day enjoying the rides at the park. We were planning to
leave in the early evening, but the lines started getting shorter so we stayed
until it closed, just squeaking on the Tatsu Roller Coaster at the very last
minute. We bought a pizza and headed to stay with Aunt Pat in San Pedro.
DAY 3: After spending the early
morning visiting with Pat, we were back on the road, heading South, towards San
Diego. We ended up in La Jolla where we saw baby sea lions and several sea
creatures and crabs in the tide pools. We decided to head to the beach for the
remainder of the afternoon and enjoyed body surging and boogie boarding. We
couldn’t go to the beach without making a sand castle as well. It was a group
effort and it withstood the first few waves as the tide came in. We decided to
head to Red Lobster for Skyler’s birthday dinner. It was a great meal and the
boys loved their crab and fresh oysters. After eating, we headed to Andy and
Sabrina’s house where cousin Katelynn was anxiously awaiting our arrival. We
visited as the kids played. Unfortunately we couldn’t stay another day and had
to leave the next morning after breakfast. They made us a great breakfast and
we were off again, heading home! We did a great job with our budget and came
home with $4.19 leftover!!
