Caribbean Cruise Day 3 - Puerto Rico

On the third day of our trip, we headed to down town San Juan where we visited the Castillo San Felipe del Morro. It is an old fortress that was built in the 1500's and was controlled by the Spanish until the late 1800's when the United States overtook the island. It was fun seeing all of the natural iguanas climbing the walls. Unfortunately Auri's flip flops started giving her a blister so dad switched her shoes. He had several funny looks as he was wearing Auri's pink flip flops that were 5 sizes too small. We then drove through Old San Juan before finding a Panda Express to eat lunch.

After lunch we wanted to visit Cuevas De Arenales which is a little river that flows through caves and ends in a large pools. We struggled getting there due to a road being shut down, so we had to take another 45 minutes to go around and miraculously found it. When we arrived at a house where we were supposed to park, we were told by others who had just come from a tour that it was a very difficult hike and we shouldn't do it in our flip flops and that our kids probably wouldn't make it. Shonnie and her family were thinking of turning back around, but we convinced them to try it with us and we could always turn around if it got too hard. The man drove us to the start of the hike for a small fee so all 13 of us piled into a small 5 passenger jeep with brakes that were going out and we were off. It was a crazy, fun ride down and we weren't sure we would make it up a couple of the hills, but we finally made it. He didn't speak much English, but told us to follow his pet dog to the trail. It was comical, but he lead us to the trail and the hike wasn't difficult at all for us. We are used to hiking and adventures. We were so glad we didn't listen to the people telling us not to go. We cliff jumped in the pool and swam through the caves to the other side where the river continued. At the end of our hike, we found a Toad that was stuck in a concrete well. He looked weak and we knew he couldn't get out without our help. So Bart used a stick to move it over to the side and was able to grab him and let him go. It took him a minute to start hopping, but then he was off. It was our good deed for the day. We went back to the house where we let the kids swim and we ate dinner. Noelle brought Lacee and Traycen over to hang out for a while as well. We made a quick stop at the grocery store to grab a few sodas to take on the cruise and breakfast for the next morning.
