No Time for a Ruptured Appendix

Aysia Mentioned that she had cramps a little stronger than normal prior to going to Hawaii but she seldom complained about it on the trip. Mom told her just to take some ibuprofen. She was able to hike, swim and participate in all the activities during the trip. We returned on Tuesday and she was right back into dancing and working out as usual. By the weekend she mentioned it wasn't going away and the pain was central and slightly to the right. She went to a BYU intensive after a 3 hour drill practice that morning, putting her at 8 hours of dance on Saturday. She came home and hung out with friends. She told mom it hurt when she had to go to the bathroom. Mom thought it might be a UTI so she tested her the next morning before church. It came back negative so mom said she would take her up to do an ultrasound on her after church thinking she just had a cyst on her ovary. They headed up to the hospital and as mom scanned her she could see it wasn't her ovary but something else. She had a large mass above her uterus and mom told Aysia they needed to check into the ER. Mom was hoping it was her appendix and not something scarier. They headed down to Mountain Point Medical Center where mom knew the ER doctors that were working well. She mentioned that Aysia needed a CT scan. When she checked in, the nurse asked what her pain level was between a 0-10. Aysia said a 0. She wasn't in pain unless she had to go to the bathroom when her bladder would push on the mass. The CT scan showed a ruptured Appendix. Aysia was devastated and started to cry, not because of the pain but because she was just nominated by her coach Lexi to compete for All-State for their team along with 2 other girls. Aysia was so excited for this opportunity and knew if she had surgery, her chance to compete at All-State would be gone since it was 11 days later and an appendectomy required a minimum of a 14 day recovery.

The surgeon came in and mentioned she thought it had ruptured prior to us going to Hawaii (about 8-10 days earlier). Since it had ruptured so long ago, she said she had too much infection to surgically remove the appendix which had now walled itself off with an abscess. She said the plan would be to put a long-term drain in the abscess, put her on some heavy duty antibiotics and hope her white count would not go up which wasn't very high to begin with. So she was admitted and the waiting began. Best case scenario and what we prayed for was that the antibiotics would work, the drain would get rid of the abscess and she could plan on an appendectomy 6 weeks later after the infection was cleared out of her system. The next morning, unfortunately the white count went up which the doctor said could have happened due to the drain and she would need to stay one more day. We prayed the white count would go down. They didn't let her eat while we waited to hear about the count so once they let her eat, she was ecstatic. The next morning we received some great news, the count went down and she was discharged with the tube still in her abdomen. She missed the Drill vs Cheer team basketball game but was able to go support her team that night.

Long story short, the drain came out 7 days later and she was able to compete at All-State the following Thursday and schedule her surgery for 6 weeks later. Her prayers were answered. She was lucky she didn't need surgery while in Hawaii and lucky it had ruptured long enough to allow her to have surgery later.

After Aysia went home from the hospital she was having a hard time keeping anything down and was throwing everything up. Mom had to work on Halloween but had a lunch prepared for her and her friends (baked potato soup and pumpkin bread bowls). She wasn't feeling great so mom had one of the ER doctors prescribe some anti-nausea medicine for her which seemed to help her get through the hour long lunch although she didn't eat. She rested the rest of the day hoping she would feel better that night to celebrate Halloween. She got through the night and on her way home almost threw up in Chash's jeep but was able to hold it in long enough to get in the house and to the toilet. That night was rough and mom was concerned that she hadn't kept any of her antibiotics down since leaving the hospital so back into the ER we went. Even after getting anti nausea medicine via intravenously, she was still throwing up. So they gave her a stronger dose and gave her a big dose of antibiotics. They changed her antibiotics she was taking at home as well. After getting 2 liters of fluids and changing her antibiotics, she was a whole new person and felt so much better. Her tube was removed 3 days later.
