This year Westlake's Drill Team had some changes with a new coaching staff. It was a bit of a rough start for the Luxelle's. Many of the first competitions didn't go the way they had planned and placed further down than they thought they deserved. As the team was going into Region, they were ranked near the bottom of the 6a schools. It was looking like they were going to have to compete at quarter finals rather than move straight ahead to semi-finals as they have in the past. It was a rough start but they were determined to finish strong.
Region did not disappoint this year as it has for several years past. Westlake has notoriously finished below what they felt was appropriate for their dance routines with American Fork High School continually passing them up although they were usually far behind in rankings. This year the girls brought it. They were hoping for a 2nd place finish which would be the highest placement the school would achieve at Region. There was a huge celebration when Westlake was announced as the 2nd place winner. The girls and coaching staff were ecstatic. They now just had to wait to see how the rest of the 6a teams did at their Region to determine if they could move straight to semi's or have to compete at quarterfinals first.
Mom took Aysia and a few girls from the Drill Team to watch one of the 6a Region competitions up in Syracuse. The competition ended in Westlake's favor giving them the opportunity to go straight to Semi-Finals. There was definitely some screaming going on from the girls as we were leaving the event.
The girls were pumped and ready to head to Semi-Finals after a team dinner and motivational speaker. They were hoping it would be enough to make it to the State finals which they missed by one spot last year. Auri made sure Aysia was given the proper send off by decorating her door for good luck!
The girls did an incredible job at the Semi-Finals. Their team wasn't named as one of the top 8 that would automatically go to the State finals, but they were told they were the team selected as the possible 9th place alternate team if they placed higher than the next set of semi-finals teams. So the wait was unbearable. The girls got together at the Wright home to watch the second semi-final round hoping their routines were good enough to send them to State. The room erupted in screams and hugs when Westlake was announced as the last team to make it to the State Finals. It was such a huge accomplishment especially coming from where they began at the start of the season. Great job girls!
