Costa Rica - Day 3

Our hotel provided an incredible breakfast every morning. From fresh fruit and juice to pancakes and eggs. Because it was a little drizzly, we thought spelunking would be a good idea. Noelle recommended going to the Venado caves which was about an hour drive from our hotel. Along the way we made a few stops and found ourselves at the Maleka Indigenous Reserve. We didn't have reservations and many take a tour guide to get there. We just showed up and they gave us a tour and samples of their food. We found one particular plant we chewed on to numb our mouths. It was what they would use to extract teeth. It was fun to see the way they used to live. Then it was on to the cave! It was AMAZING! We were outfitted with helmets and lamps. Luckily we wore  the appropriate water shoes. Our guide took us up and down and all around. We had to army crawl through a few areas. We were a little nervous about the extra large spiders that lived in the cave. Dad was brave enough to hold one. We were told they were not poisonous which made us a little more at ease... just a little. There were also several bats flying around. The waterfalls and heart of the cave was well worth all the scratches and bumps we received. The girls were surprisingly brave. We all loved the cave! We then grabbed a bite to eat in a small town where we sampled items at the bakery shop and other small shops before heading to the Arenal hot springs river where most of the locals go to soak in the warm springs. It was fun to move up or down stream and find the different water temperatures change. We like the upper level due to the warmer water. Unfortunately, Auri lost her new bracelet she bought at the reserve in the water as she was trying to pass it to Aysia. We looked for about 30 minutes and finally had to give up. The rest of the day was paradise! We ate a late dinner and went to bed early.
